Thought provoking piece, Shirley. As you say, there are no hard and fast rules about not coaching friends and or about whether it’s OK to become friends after the coaching finishes, but it’s still a grey area. In an ideal world we’d probably never coach a friend or contemplate becoming friendly with a former client, but again, as you say, there is always the exception. I suspect the best approach is to try and keep coaching and friendship separate but to accept that very occasionally these things happen. I think the most important thing is to be very clear about the boundaries, where they lie and what is inside or outside the coaching sphere and what lies inside/outside the friendship sphere.
